Broken Calculator

When do you think of your great ideas?  For me it often occurs as I am laying in bed ready to fall asleep surrounded in complete darkness.  I guess it probably has something to do with our minds ability to relax and produce amazing ideas.  I'm not sure, but I do know that having the notepad app on my cell phone and having my cell phone in easy reach at all times certainly helps me to remember these "great" ideas in the morning.  Thank goodness for the cell phone!  :)

So, as I was lying in bed one night last week, my mind wandered to thinking about my hallway bulletin board.  I am pretty sure I was past my 6 week time-to-change-it mark, but good thing no one really keeps track that closely.  Anyway, I knew it was about time to change it and then one of those great ideas popped in my head.

I was thinking of somehow displaying our wonderful class routine we do called broken calculator.  Broken calculators are daily problem solving compuations that can challenge your students' number sense.  I usually display a broken calculator problem on the projector a couple times a week for the students to solve at the beginning of math time.  The students absolutely love solving them!  Now, how to make this into a bulletin board?  Here is what popped into my head...

Obviously, that is my final product, but it is just about what I envisioned last week laying quietly as I typed the idea into my notepad on my cell phone!

Here's a few close ups on the students' work...

You can find 20 of these workpages, more samples, and task cards all included in my new packet.  Now, you can make your very own broken calculator bulletin board!

Happy Monday!

After a hectic normal Monday morning, the rest of my day went pretty smooth.  Then, at the end of the day, I was pleasantly surprised by a little letter from one of my students last year.  It was short and sweet, but made me smile so I thought I would share...

It's small things like this that help you remember the effect you have on students.  This is why I teach.  I feel very blessed to be a teacher!

Also wanted to thank Susan from http://thankgoditsfirstgrade.blogspot.com/.  Thank you for all your help and encouragement with Teachers Pay Teachers and my blog!  You are a great friend!  Please visit her.  She shares great teaching tips as she tackles first grade with grace.

Happy Monday Everybody!

"I DO..." Three more months to practice!

I can hardly believe it!  I am getting married in only three months from today!  I, I mean WE still have a lot to do, but I feel much better after going to the Bridal Spectacular bridal show yesterday.

I officially have the DJ and photographers booked!  Yeah!  Plus I got uplighting too!  And while I was booking that at the bridal show, the fiance bought his suit for the wedding.
Things are going good.

To keep me organized, I invested in a bridal book.  Loving it :)

Thank you also to Susan, my fellow bride, for joining me at the show.
Sorry, but had to post the pics!

New (to me) Apps...I'm obsessed!

Hello all!  I hope everyone reading had a relaxing weekend.  I spent most of today obsessing over two new Apps I discovered from friends!  They are Viggle (thank you Becky) and Lose It (thank you Susan, Lindsey, and Sara).

Here's a snapshot below just in case you would like to check them out too...

First up, Viggle.  Upon opening the App you will see different shows to that you can check in with.  I picked the Texas and Patriots game.  This is what my screen showed below...

I then pushed the purple "check in now" button.  This is when I was really amazed!  The App listens to my TV for about 10 seconds and verifies that I am listening to the game.  It then gave me +50 Viggle points.  I can then collect the points and get free stuff!  For example, you can get a $5 Starbucks card for 12,500 points.  Cool, right?  Granted, it will take me awhile to get those points, but it's still a fun App.

I then noticed the orange button on my screen that said "play along with MYGUY."  I decided to check that out and it was game I could play while watching the football game.  I could also earn more Wiggle points!  I picked players throughout the game and got points every time the player I picked did something well (similar to Fantasy Football scoring if you are familiar).  Anyway, with the help of the fiance (of course, I'm not that football savvy), I won!  Woohoo!  Add another +1000 Viggle points to that total...

Next up, Lose it.  The wedding diet has officially started and this App can help keep me on track.  It tracks all the foods I eat and exercise I do in one day.  It is SUPER easy to use and has restaurant foods and a place to scan barcodes if you eat something that has a barcode on it.  I am loving it!  I haven't eaten dinner yet today, but so far I am on track.

So, enjoy these new Apps!  Warning: They are addictive!

P.S. - Can you guess what I will be checking in on tomorrow?  Bring it Viggle!

Happy 2013 {A Great Card Holder Idea for Next Christmas!}

Wow!  I can't believe the new year is already in full swing!  I am so excited for this year to begin.  Most importanty because it is the year I get to marry the love of my life!  I hope everyone reading this had a relaxing break.  I know mine has been wonderful!  Here is a snapshot...

The last day of school before break was crazy and exciting.  I recieved lots of wonderful gifts from my students including this edible arrangement that we all got to share.  Thank you to all :)

Then I traveled off to Pennsylvania for a week to visit my family.  The first thing that caught my eye was my sister's creative idea to hang Christmas cards.  I usually tape them to my wall and then what happens?  They fall!  It is so annoying!  Well, check out this idea...

First, attach a ribbon with a strong nail on the wall you want to hang the cards on (close to the top of the ceiling).  Use a bow to hide the nail.

Next, easily fasten each card on with a simple clothespin and DONE!  It looks so adorable hanging.  I even thought about painting the clothespins or decorating them for when I do this next year.  Thanks for the great idea Katie!

Then the snow began...

Mom, you are great at dusting off the car!  :)

We made some yummy Christmas cookies to keep warm...

Before I knew it, it was already time to go back to Vegas (just in time to ring in the new year with the fiance)!  We spent it at my new favorite hotel, The Cosmopolitan.  Here's look at the strip...so many people!

Also I saw the coolest vending machine on New Year's Eve...yes, that is a vending machine!  And I bought a makeup bag with mascara :)

Lastly, today I finished my narrative writing packet!  It is detailed and complete with everything that I wish I had before I taught narratives this year.  Can't wait to use it next year!  It is aligned to common core standards for 3-5 grades.  Today and tomorrow it is 20% off.

Buy it here.

Enjoy and happy 2013!
